Recondition Battery Guide

This Do It Yourself Recondition Battery Guide consists of 21 chapters that will show you step-by-step how to recondition your battery. When a healthy battery is recharged, this lead sulfate is converted back to lead and sulfuric acid. But in tired battery, the lead sulfate changes to a crystalline form that coats the batterys lead plates reducing its capacity. This process is known as sulfation. It is a common occurrence in lead-acid batteries and a major reason for their failure. The good news is that you can often reverse sulfation utilizing a specialized high-current, pulse that effectively breaks down the crystalline lead sulfate and turns it back into lead and sulfuric acid, thus cleaning the lead plates and restoring charge capacity. So before you throw that battery away, consider battery reconditioning as a way to save it. Read more here...

Charge the battery The battery charge may be depleted

Check the battery status light If the battery status light flashes orange or is a steady orange, the battery charge is low or depleted. Connect the computer to an electrical outlet. If the battery status light flashes green and orange, the battery is too hot to charge. Shut down the computer, disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet, and then let the battery and computer cool to room temperature. If the battery status light rapidly flashes orange, the battery may be defective. Contact Dell. See your Owner's Manual for contact information.

If the battery is experiencing a permanent failure, when you press the battery test button, you will see no indicators. If you install such a battery into the computer, the amber battery status indicator on the computer flashes rapidly. To purchase a new battery, call Dell or access the Dell World Wide Web site at http Dispose of the old battery properly.

Troubleshooting a Power Failure

If the computer is powered by the AC adapter, see the next subsection, Total Power Failure When Using the AC Adapter. If the computer is using battery power, see Total Power Failure When Using a Battery found later in this section. 4. Is the battery status indicator blinking, indicating that the battery is charging Yes. Go to step 6. 5. Does the battery status indicator remain constantly lit (not blinking) Yes. Go to step 7 7 Does the battery status indicator remain constantly lit (not blinking), indicating that the battery is fully charged

First Low Battery Warning

The first low-battery warning a blinking amber battery status indicator occurs when you have about 15 minutes of battery life left under current conditions and the computer is not connected to an electrical outlet. Figure 5 shows the battery status indicator. NOTICE When you see a low-battery warning, save your work immediately. Then replace the battery or connect your computer to an electrical outlet. If your computer uses a nickel-metal hydride battery and you ignore the first low-battery warning, the computer may activate S2D mode before displaying a second low-battery warning. After the first low-battery warning, if no input output (I O) activity occurs within 75 seconds, the computer activates S2D mode. If the computer has no S2D partition, the computer enters standby mode. The computer can preserve data for several hours in standby mode. If you have set the computer to enter S2D mode after a certain amount of time with no I O activity, the computer enters S2D mode before the...

Caution Do not puncture or incinerate the battery

Lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries are longer lived than conventional batteries and do not require replacement as often. Do not dispose of these batteries along with common household waste. Contact local authorities for the location of a chemical waste collection program nearest you. To purchase a new battery, call Dell or access the Dell World Wide Web site at http

The first thing that needs to be removed is the battery. This will ensure that no power from the laptop battery gets to the CMOS and holds the passwords in there. The latch is pulled to the side, and the battery is flipped up and out. The CMOS Battery powers the CMOS BIOS chip, giving it power to hold the settings and passwords and such while the laptop has no power.

Low Battery Warning

C) NOTICE To avoid losing or corrupting data, save your work immediately after a low-battery warning. Then connect the computerto an electrical outlet, or install a second battery in the module bay. If the battery runs completely out of power, hibernate mode begins automatically. A pop-up window warns you when the battery charge is approximately 90 percent depleted. For more information about low-battery alarms, see your User's Guide. A low-battery warning occurs when the battery charge is approximately 90 percent depleted. The computer beeps once, indicating that minimal battery operating time remains. During that time, the speaker beeps periodically. If two batteries are installed, the low-battery warning means that the combined charge of both batteries is approximately 90 percent depleted. The computer enters hibernate mode when the battery charge is at a critically low level. For more information about low-battery alarms, see your User's Guide.

Max Battery

The Low battery alarm and Critical battery alarm settings alert you with a message when the battery charge falls below a certain percentage. When you receive your computer, the Low battery alarm and Critical battery alarm check boxes are selected. Dell recommends that you continue to use these settings. See the battery section in the Tell Me How help file (see 'Accessing Help ) for more information on low-battery warnings. The Power Meter tab displays the current power source and amount of battery charge remaining.

Your computer's battery provides power when an electrical outlet is not available. A battery in the battery bay is standard with the computer. Lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are longer lived than conventional batteries and do not require replacement as often. To double battery life, install a second battery in the media bay. Lithium-ion batteries do not have the memory effect that is exhibited by NiMH and nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries. You do not need to drain a lithium-ion battery completely before recharging it. A lithium-ion battery will not forget at which point it is fully charged. NiMH and NiCad batteries may not charge fully if they are partially drained and then recharged. You can expect 2.5 to 5 hours of battery life with a single fully charged battery and 5 to 10 hours of battery life with two fully charged batteries. Actual performance varies, depending on which power management features are enabled and which application programs are being used....

Battery Disposal

SYour computer uses both a lithium-ion battery pack and a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) coin cell battery. For instructions about replacing the lithium-ion battery pack in your computer, refer to Running the System With a Battery in the system Help. The NiMH battery is a long-life battery, and it is very possible that you will never need to replace it. However, if this battery ever needs to be replaced, the procedure must be performed by an authorized service technician.
